Electric guitars are more easy to play than acoustic or classics because the strings are closer to the fretboard. For this reason they are excellent for beginners. The sound is perfect for rock and metal and with some effects they are also great for blues and pop music.

Different from an acoustic for instance, the sound of an electric guitar largely dependents on an electrical signal, which the vibration of the metal strings near sensitive pickups (which are magnets wrapped with coils of very fine wire) generates. This signal is sent to an amplifier through a cable.

This is the reason why you will need an amplifier when you are going to play an electric guitar.

There are a lot of nice starter sets available, which usually contain an electric guitar, a cable and an amplifier (sometimes even a cable, tuner and strap as well). Both the electric guitars and the amplifiers come in all sorts, shapes, sizes and prices ranges. You can choose for a plain and simple guitar or a unique one in a certain shape (they are available in the shape of almost anything). This is the same for the amplifiers, there are basic amplifiers available and there are also amplifiers available with built-in effects.

If you are planning on playing gigs in the near future, you might consider a powerful and more expensive amplifier, but if you are just a beginner who wants to practise at home, you will only need a 15 watt amplifier

Most amplifiers have a headphone jack so you can play without disturbing anyone.

There are also some great portable effect devices available for your electric so you can take it with you with your earphones without needing an amplifier at all.

With this same device it is possible to use a lot of effects with a basic amplifier.

A lot of electric guitars have a "tremolo arm" (or whammy bar).

This allows you to 'bend' notes or chords down in pitch or perform a vibrato embellishment.

There are all kinds of effects available for electric guitars (like distortion, fuzz, delay, wah-wah, sustain, increase the gain). These effects sound really cool (when done right) and you can not do stuff like this with an acoustic...
