Take a look at your guitar strings. Do the strings look rusty, worn, or discoloured? Consider the sound of they produce. As you strum one string at a time consider the tune of each string. Does it sound dull? After tuning your guitar does it loose tuning quickly? If you answered yes to any of the above questions then it is time to change your guitar strings. Let's take a look at how to do this.

Supplies Needed

* Needle-nose Pliers

* Soft Cotton Cloth

* String Winder

* Guitar Cleaning Polish

* New set of strings

Removing Guitar Strings

1. Using the string winder unwind each string slowly until each one is completely slack.

2. Using the needle-nose pliers, gently pull the string from the part it is wrapped around (the capstan) until it is completely free.

3. Once again, using the end of your string winder grab the pin at the end of the guitar and gently pull the pin until it comes out of the guitar.

4. Follow through with the first three steps until all strings have been removed.

5. Clean the guitar surface.

Re-stringing the Guitar

Left handed guitar players will string the guitar in reverse of the right hand.

1. Slightly bend the ball end of the string and pull it through the hole. Be sure to pull the string about 3 inches through.

2. Next, bring the string up over the tie block and underneath itself towards the starting point (entry).

3. Down over the tie block wrap the end of the string around itself in the pattern of the number 8.

4. Take the other end and insert it through the hole in the capstan.

5. Next, wrap the string around the back and underneath itself to secure it in place.

6. Turn the key with your left hand while using your right hand to maintain tension until all slack in the string is taken up. Be sure to keep it straight as you tighten it.

7. Cut off any excess string.
