If you are not the cool and confident guitar player you have always pictured yourself being you probably should practice a little more. Unfortunately, the longer you practice the more your fingers are going to hurt. For myself, the finger pain was the hardest hurdle to leap over when learning to play guitar. I am able to give you advice from my guitar instruction background and my experience for the quickest and best results. The absolute best advice for you is to work through the pain, because with time your fingers will be playing guitar for you without you even thinking. This pain in the fingers is the most common issue which I have come across with my students when they are trying to learn acoustic guitar.

Which leads us to the common question, "Which is better to learn on acoustic or electric?"

Well yes, the myth is true, in fact it is better to learn acoustic guitar than it is electric guitar. Even if your parents or spouse bought you the acoustic guitar with the wrong intentions, (it is softer) it is actually the right decision. This is because it is more difficult to learn on, and once your learn, it will make playing an electric guitar be like a breeze.

The reasoning behind an acoustic guitar being better to learn on than a electric guitar are as follows: Acoustic guitars have bigger fret boards, their strings are raised higher, and they are bigger and bulkier than an electric. The point is if you can learn to play an acoustic guitar then you will have no problem learning to play an electric guitar and if you learn on an electric guitar I can assure you that you will have problems playing an acoustic guitar.

Learning a new instrument is no easy task and no matter what instrument you choose you will probably feel pain. Lets take drums for example, your arms will absolutely kill you when you first start because you are building the muscles you never use. With guitar it is going to be your fingers.

How else have you worked out your fingers in your life? No where at all.

So how long is it going to take for your fingers to stop hurting? Basically about 99% of people that learn to play acoustic guitar have fingers that hurt within the first 15 minutes of playing each session they play. If you just keep practicing, with time this length of time will go down.

Knowing this information, I am able to tell if my students practice along with how much they have been practicing when they are first starting out. It is pretty funny. Students that have been taking forced lessons because of their parents have had their fingers hurt for about 6 months while on the contrary I have motivated students who practice their tails off. Their finger tips are no longer in pain after about the first month of playing.

It is absolutely easier to learn to play acoustic guitar once you have built the strength in your fingers. The key to learn acoustic guitar is to stay motivated and keep your goal in mind. Keep practicing and keep your expectations high because in no time you will be playing all the songs you have always wanted to learn.
