If there is one musical instrument where it really matters a great deal whether you are right or left handed, then that instrument has to be the guitar. As it turns, the way the strings in the guitar are arranged is such that they increase in thickness from the bottom (to the top) of the guitar neck's horizontal plane. Whether it is a lead guitar, a rhythm guitar or a bass guitar you are looking at, the thinnest string has to be at the bottom, with the thickest string at the top; for you to be able to play the instrument properly. What this means is that if you turn the typical guitar around, from the right hand to the left hand, you end up with the thickest string at the bottom of the neck's horizontal plane, and the thinnest wire at the top - and it becomes impossible to play the instrument.

Now seeing that most people are right-handed, guitar manufacturers tend to make their instruments to be suitable for right hand playing by default. And as we have seen, these right handed guitars are impossible to play for the left-handed. Yet the left handed people want to play the guitar too. Indeed, since some psychologists tell us that the left-handed people are more inclined to creative pursuits, there is a possibility that they would want to play the guitar more. The solution to the problem created by this whole situation was found in the creation of what are now referred to as left handed guitars.

Guitars are pretty much like the ordinary right handed guitars. But the neck 'protrudes' to the left, rather than to the right; making it possible for left handed people to play on them. We have both left handed 'box' guitars and left handed electric guitars. But our focus here is one the latter.

In some shops, electric guitars will tend to cost slightly more than ordinary (right handed) electric guitars. The vendors who sell them slightly more justify this extra price with the argument that they are specialty items, and that their turnover is likely to be slower than that of the ordinary guitars - seeing that there are only so many left handed people in any given population. But we are also increasingly seeing a trend where some vendors decide not to punish left-handed people for their unique gift, so that they sell the guitars at the same price as the ordinary electric guitars.

Finding electric guitars is not always very easy. Some guitar shops, not wanting to have items that stick for too long on their shelves, decide not to stock such left handed electric guitars. And in days gone by, when shopping was limited to these brick and mortar shops, that would have presented a major problem. But with the advent of online shopping, it shouldn't be hard to get a electric guitar, even if your local vendor doesn't have them on stock. You can always get online, where you are sure to find numerous guitar vendors selling such electric vendors. Some actually almost exclusively deal in the said left handed guitars; so that in their stores, the guitars are not treated as a specialty item, but as the main items; complete with discounts on them.
