 Which is better to start learning on? Acoustic or electric guitar? Let's explore the benefits and the drawbacks of both.

First we need to ask which kind of music do you like to listen to, want to learn how to play and eventually write?  Do you listen to songs with more acoustic or electric guitar sounds? This should lead you on the right path.

That said, what are the benefits of acoustic guitar? Nowadays, many acoustics have electric capability. I like the fact you can play in a park, on the front porch or a public performance. Versatility! You can take it any where. I'll sit on my front porch and people will walk by and ask if I can play this or that song. If I do, I make a point of having them sing it with or for me. Kind of like forced karaoke. We've all know the sitting around the campfire scenario. It can be corny or funny. If you get good enough you can join the local band or church group.

What are some of the acoustic drawbacks? Strings on acoustics need to be thicker for proper sound projection. It is okay to start with medium or light gauge strings and try heavies later. Either way, if you are practicing 30 minutes day, you should acquire callouses. Then when you play electric, it will feel like butter.

What are the benefits of electric guitar? Thinner strings, easier to play. Less likely you'll get discouraged from overly sore fingers. You will develop callouses though. Many practice amps have headphone jacks. You can practice, mess up, keep repeating things and not be so loud that others will do what they can to make you stop learning. You can play many styles from mellow to loud.

What are the electric drawbacks? Whammy bars make it hard to keep your guitar in tune so avoid them in the beginning. You need an amplifier to really enjoy. Because there are more parts to fail you could get stuck waiting to fix a pickup. That is rare. Take care of it.

So my personal recommendation is to start with an electric for the privacy while learning and the ease of play, which makes the odds better that you'll get through the learning curve and sore fingers. Besides, I think more people like to rock!
